During the 80′s most of the old line-up of Ford like Saloon were being replaced with the new Hatchbacks. The Ford Orion was specifically built in order to fill the gap for the 4 door saloon. This situation arose because of the fall of the famous car Cortina.
Ford Orion included many very required features such as front sport seats, sunroof, locking, rear head restraints, tachometer, electric windows and not to mention the information binnacle which keeps the driver updated regarding the maintainance issues. Till today more than twenty one million Beetles have been brought to market.
During the 50′s Beetle happened to be the most powerful and the most comfortable when compared to any other cars (especially small cars) of Europe. Volkswagen Beetle was designed to be having a sustain high speed on Autobahn, and thus the same led for it to become one of the most produced and the longest running automobile. Beetle went on to replace the front wheel drive models and climb up the ladder to become the top selling car in the USA. Main reason for its widespread success can be given as the extremely superb build quality and of course the matching eye-candy advertises. All of the cars from USA like Chevrolet Vega, Pinto from Ford, and Chevrolet Corvair have been trying to keep up to the standards set by Volkswagen Beetle.
Before 1967, Beetle was called The Kafer which in German stands for beetle. But only after that year did the Company itself started calling the car by that name. And the company marketed the car with the same name in USA since that year. It was recently around in 1998 when the Volkswagen Company revised the Beetle model and introduced the New Beetle which is based upon the technology used in the Volkswagen Golf Mk4. Ever since then, Beetle has been the cutest car on the road.
2. Volkswagen Golf (From 1974- Till today)
Approximate Sales: 25,100,000
The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car manufactured by Volkswagen since 1974 and marketed worldwide across six generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).
The front-wheel drive Golf was Volkswagen’s first successful replacement for the air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, it is Volkswagen’s best-selling model and the world’s third best-selling model, with more than 25 million built by 2007.
Most production of the Golf was initially in the 3-door hatchback style. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate/wagon (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979-2002), and a Golf-derived notchback saloon/sedan, variously called Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Vento or Volkswagen Bora (from 1979). The cars have filled many market segments, from basic personal cars, to high-performance hot hatches.
The nameplate Golf derives from the German word for Gulf Stream — and the period in its history when VW named vehicles after prominent winds, including also the Passat (after the German word for Trade wind), Jetta (after Jet stream), Bora (after Bora) and Scirocco (after Sirocco).
Main article: Volkswagen Golf Mk1
In May, 1974 Volkswagen presented the first-generation Golf as a modern front wheel drive long-range replacement for the Volkswagen Beetle. Later Golf variations included the Golf GTI “hot hatch” (introduced in June, 1976), a Diesel-powered version (from September, 1976), the Jetta notchback saloon version (from October, 1979), the Golf Cabriolet (from January, 1980) and a Golf-based pickup, the Volkswagen Caddy. All variants proved instantly popular with the only notable technical flaw being the poor braking in RHD models, due to the master cylinder for the brakes being placed on the left for LHD cars, as Volkswagen never intended the Golf to be sold abroad.
The Golf Mk1 was sold as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada, and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico.
A facelifted version of the Golf Mk1 was produced in South Africa as the Citi Golf from 1984 to 2009.
